Font design is something I love to do. It is occasionally necessary for a logo or marketing project I’m working on because I can’t find exactly what I want. I’d like to do more font design but it’s a fairly labor-intensive process for potentially very little payoff if you’re using it for a logo. A great reason to design an actual font is if you’re going to use it in headers and throughout marketing materials. Here are some fonts I’ve developed over the years.
Font Design Example: Alicia Handwriting
I was originally inspired years ago when a past co-worker at Publicis in San Francisco ended up having his handwriting made into a font which was used across all the ad materials at the time for Jamba Juice. It wasn’t a very pretty font, but it’s letterforms were honest and felt like actual handwriting. It led me to create a font out of my own handwriting.
If you want to use the Alicia Handwriting font for commercial purposes, please email me to arrange purchasing a license and I’ll send you a .ttf file. Or make your own font at yourfonts.com.
Font Design Example: Zero Strategist
To reflect the Zero Strategist brand, I wanted something that was futuristic, bold, and fairly expanded. I took inspiration from space ships and cars. This client is an entrepreneurial web developer who specializes in building safe websites.
Font Design Example: PDX Empanadas Font
A custom font was made from the handwriting of popular Uruguayan artist, Joaquín Torres García. The font can be used for menus and other promotional materials to let the owners quickly and easily create on-brand items on their own.
The lettering was also used in a mural for the outside of the foodcart, painted by B.T. Livermore. (see it in use here)
Font Design Example: BarCamp Portland
At BarCamp Portland in 2013 this font was born. I invited participants to ink letters and we combined them to create a custom font. The complexity of lines was a little too deep though. The letterforms would need to be simplified and the font remade in order for it to be usable. But I really like how it turned out as a really fun art project!
